Ignition: South Edition

After some down time, it’s once again time to switch the car community key to Ignition. Ready to start?

When most of us think of car related events in Saint Lucia, we tend to lean towards the motorsports aspect; drag racing and autocross with redlining engines and screeching tire smoke. But sometimes we need something more relaxing. A calm before the next storm, and that is why Time Line Events and AAMA have associated with us here at Lucian Streets to pull off a bigger, better Ignition!

Not wanting to localize the events to just one half of the island, the second Ignition event jumped down to the south which brought forth some familiar as well as some new faces to the event. One would imagine that without the wow factor of cars speeding down a track, an event such as this wouldn’t gather much people but that was not the case. Brought together by a love for cars, man’s instinctual need to socialise and just the chance to see some of the cars they adore up close, the venue went from free to crowded in a matter of minutes.

Modified cars, OEM cars, sports cars, luxury cars, pick up trucks… you name it, it was there. The beauty  of the nature of a car meet is the sort of diversity it brings out as it calls upon nothing more than to show up, park your vehicle and socialise. The atmosphere was awash with positive attitudes and the general feel of cohesion and relative relaxation as everyone enjoyed the change of pace. Racers got to stand by idle as they normally would not and those who could only see the cars from a distance could now get up close and personal.

However, it wasn’t all peace and quiet for as the sun began to fall, the dogs of war were let loose. Shots were fired and eardrums assaulted as the rev out competition first took place. Secondly the familiar smell of tire smoke and noise of rabid internal combustion once again filled the ears of all car enthusiasts present as one driver after the other brought their machine into the spotlight so that the tires and the tarmac could have an all-out brawl that resulted in just as much smoke as there was excitement.

At the end of it all, Ken in the well known red MR2 dubbed Dyno Boost took the crowd decided 1st place in the revving competition, with impressive runner ups like Top Spec himself with clean and powerful bangs from his Evo VIII’s launch control and Brian Beepat whose Ford Raptor seems to use Darth Vader’s helmet for a blow-off valve.

Despite truly great attempts from the red MR2, a Navara known as Temptation which gave us more of a one tire inferno than a fire, not even needing water to turn rubber into smoke, and Rossini’s Chevy pickup showing us that off-road isn’t the only thing it can do, the crowd awarded 1st place in the burnout competition to none other than JD AKA ‘Features’ and his black Toyota Chaser. Lighting up those tires several times and ending it with a tandem burnout teamed up with a Toyota Soarer driven by Diesel, JD left Ignition with two brand new tires waiting for him back at Northwest. So, with yet another successful event come and gone, it would appear that 2018 truly is the year of the motor enthusiast.
